A year ago Paddy and myself were pondering where we want to live next, having felt we had done everything Birmingham had to offer (except manage to eat a half meter long frankfurter at the Christmas market- but that challenge is for another day!). Our ideas were fairly modest as most of them begin, including places such as London, Brighton, Southampton & Bath. We thought a change of scenery, a city with lots to do and if we could somehow manage a few extra degrees and a little extra sunshine out of the British weather that would be absolutely fabulous. That was until Paddy planted the seed in our minds of ‘Australia’, followed by the innocent words, ‘why not….?’. Now these are a slightly dangerous yet exciting two words because they have brought us from our discussions on a little dwelling in the South of England to now having a permanent residency visa to live in Australia. It has also taken us from thinking how nice it would be to stop over for couple of days for a modest little break on the way there, to now having planned a massive exploration across 6 countries! The power of two words and adventurous minds!
We begin the trip this coming Saturday by flying to the French Alps where we are spending just over a week skiing with Paddy’s lovely mum Karen, her husband William, and a few snow loving friends. We are then trading in the -10 degrees and croissants for plus 30 and curry by flying to Mumbai to spend a week with a friend we haven’t seen in far too long, Katya. Then its off to Singapore to see in the Chinese New Year, and that’s where the planning stops. Well its not completely stopped (don’t panic mum!) we have a bit of a vague idea of where we’d like to go, we’ve plotted a few of the exciting and beautiful places on the map above but we really don’t know how long we want to travel for or how far we want to go… so we are going to make it up as we go along and somewhere at the end of it all start our new life in Melbourne.
So to our dear friends and family we are going to miss you all so much, and we will try our best to keep this blog updated with our stories. And when we get settled in Australia you’re all invited! 😉
Love Paddy & Rach xx
